Though I am not of Mexican descent, one thing is certain, I LOVE me some cultural celebrations! Mostly because my inherited traditions and celebrations are about as plain as buttered bread. So early on in my years, I started to love learning about other cultures. And every time I get a chance to learn, taste, or experience other cultures traditions and celebrations, I dive in with a full heart!
Cinco de Mayo: This celebration, filled with vibrant colors, amazing food, and lively music, is the perfect excuse to gather your friends and family for a fun-filled fiesta. But before we dive into party tips, let’s take a moment to understand the history behind this holiday and why it has become such a hit in the United States.

What is Cinco de Mayo? A Brief History
Many people mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day, but that’s not the case! Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. During this battle, a small and under-equipped Mexican army defeated the much larger and better-armed French forces. While this wasn’t a major turning point in Mexico’s history, it became a symbol of Mexican resilience and pride, particularly for people of Mexican descent in the U.S.
In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place, and is more of a regional holiday. The rest of the country typically doesn’t throw large festivities around the date.
Why Has Cinco de Mayo Become Popular in the U.S.?
While Cinco de Mayo isn’t widely celebrated across Mexico, it has grown into a significant cultural celebration in the United States, mostly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. It gained traction in the 1960s during the Chicano civil rights movement, where it became a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture.
Today, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a festive holiday embraced by Americans of all backgrounds. The celebration has spread thanks to:
- Cultural pride: Mexican-Americans use this day to honor their heritage and share their traditions.
- Food and drink: The popularity of Mexican cuisine, like tacos, guacamole, margaritas, and cerveza, makes it an irresistible excuse for a party! Pretty sure most of us used this holiday as the perfect excuse to go out and sample a little too much tequila in our 20’s!
- Commercialization: Bars and restaurants have embraced the holiday, offering specials and hosting themed events, making it a mainstream celebration.

How to Host a Fun Cinco de Mayo Party
Decor Ideas to Set the Scene
To transform your space into a festive fiesta zone, think bold colors and authentic Mexican decor!
- Bright Colors: Go for colorful banners, Papel picado (traditional Mexican paper decorations), and vibrant tablecloths. Use bright, bold hues like deep blues, reds, yellows, and greens to create a lively and authentic.
- Cactus or Succulent Centerpieces: Use mini cactus plants as centerpieces for a fun, desert-themed touch. And if you were going to send guests home with something special, these could act as the perfect gift.
- Pinatas: You can’t have a Cinco de Mayo party without a piñata! It’s fun for both kids and adults, and it doubles as decor until it’s time to crack it open.
Delicious Mexican-Inspired Food & Drink
One of the best parts of Cinco de Mayo? The food and drinks! Here’s what to include for a mouthwatering spread:
- Taco Bar: Let guests build their own tacos with a variety of fillings like carne asada, chicken, beans, and all the toppings (guacamole, salsa, cheese, sour cream).
- One of my closest friends has taught me to make things like: Flautas and Birria (which I lovingly call dippy tacos)
- Street Corn: Serve up elote (Mexican street corn) covered in mayo, chili powder, lime juice, and cotija cheese.
- Guacamole & Salsa: Set up a station with different types of salsas and dips, including guac, Pico de Gallo, and spicy salsa verde.
- Margaritas & Cervezas: Keep the drinks flowing with classic margaritas, both on the rocks and frozen. Don’t forget a variety of Mexican beers like Corona and Modelo.
- Mocktails: Offer agua frescas (fruit-based drinks) like hibiscus or watermelon for those who prefer non-alcoholic options.

- Miniature Bottles of Tequila: A nod to one of Mexico’s most iconic exports.

- The mini cactuses or Succulents: You know, the ones you used to decorate your table.
